Nursing is one of the most vital and in-demand professions in health care. This four-year program, offered in partnership with the University of Manitoba, allows students to complete their entire degree at University College of the North (UCN) in The Pas or Thompson. With a focus on community-based care and the health needs of northern populations, the program prepares graduates to make a meaningful difference in their communities. Upon completion, students earn a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) from the University of Manitoba and are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
Program Overview
Students can complete the full four years of study at University College of the North (UCN) on either the The Pas or Thompson campus. The program emphasizes a community-based approach to health care, with a special focus on addressing the health needs of northern populations while supporting the unique learning needs of its students. Applicants will apply to the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences College of Nursing – Collaborative University College of the North Cohort of Bachelor of Nursing. Graduates are conferred with a Bachelor of Nursing degree (BN) from the University of Manitoba, and are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
UCN Nursing Student Association
The Nursing Student Association (NSA) is comprised of all Bachelor Nursing students at UCN. The NSA aims to support its membership and enrich their time at UCN by providing additional learning opportunities (lunch and learns), social events, volunteer opportunities, and the possibility of attending the Canadian Nursing Association regional and national conferences. The NSA may hold events during nursing week or at any time during the school year. The NSA board is comprised of nursing students in good standing who have been nominated and elected by the nursing student body.

A nursing career provides a wide range of employment opportunities. Registered nurses are employed in a variety of institutional, community, administration, educational, and research settings. Nursing care is provided to individuals, families, and communities with a focus on promoting health, preventing illness, and caring for the ill. Since nurses work in an interdisciplinary health care environment, strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Nurses must utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet client needs. Graduates are qualified for employment anywhere in Canada, and opportunities also exist to work abroad.

For the past 22 years, the University of Manitoba and the University College of the North (UCN) have had a collaborative partnership to deliver the Bachelor of Nursing program in The Pas and Thompson, Manitoba. The same BN curriculum is delivered at all three campuses.
- Theory and Clinical courses follow the same curriculum as the University of Manitoba.
- Bachelor of Nursing UM
- UCN has an on-site team of instructors and clinical education facilitators, as well as instructors from UM in all 3 years in the BN program.
