The University College of the North offers a comprehensive program of study leading to three-year and four-year majors in Aboriginal and Northern Studies.
Building from a focus on Aboriginal cultures of Northern Manitoba, this interdisciplinary program aims to further understandings of the experiences of Aboriginal peoples and communities in the past and present and to consider regional, national and international dimensions
3 – 4 Years
Start your career in the automotive industry with our 10-month hands-on preemployment automotive service technician program.
10 months (Sep – June)
Revitalize culture and build your career by gaining proficiency in Cree, a primary Indigenous language. This program will start you on a journey toward fluency, a grounding in culture and opening doors to meaningful work that supports reconciliation and strengthens communities.
1 – 3 years
A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University College of the North will provide students with important skills in the areas of written and oral communication, research, independent and critical thinking, problem solving, and team work.
3 – 4 Years
A Bachelor or Business Administration (BBA) Degree can help students learn Management, Organization, Motivation and Leadership. This 2+2 degree program reflects the mandate of UCN by incorporating Aboriginal and Northern Manitoba perspectives. Students will learn how to apply decision-making processes and communicate effectively in public and private business enterprises.
4 years
The Business Administration two-year diploma program provides graduates with the knowledge and skills required for entry-level management positions in business, industry and public administration, as well as preparing them to be small business entrepreneurs.
2 Years
This one-year program is designed to provide the student with basic carpentry knowledge and the skills to gain employment in the construction field. Students will learn all phases of the woodworking and building construction trades.
1 Year
University College of the North’s Community Economic Development two-year diploma program prepares graduates for a range of employment and self-employment opportunities, including contributing to the health of the natural environment, building on community resources and capacities, increasing community control and ownership, and stabilizing local, and community economies.
2 Years
This 40-week program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in Culinary Arts and prepare students for employment in this field. The students will be working and cooking food in the UCN cafeteria.
40 Weeks
Licensed Practical Nurses work in a growing range of health-care settings and play an increasingly important role within interprofessional clinical teams. UCN’s DPN program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to practice confidently as professional members of the health-care team and to effectively contribute as Licensed Practical Nurses.
2 Years
This two-year diploma program maximizes your knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for employment and advancement in early childhood education.
2 Years
The Educational Assistant certificate program is a paraprofessional certificate program designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to provide educational assistance to students, teachers, counsellors and other educational professionals in a variety of settings.
530 Hour
The Electrical Trades Fundamentals program at University College of the North is a hands-on, entry-level certificate program designed to equip students with the essential skills, safety practices, and technical knowledge required for employment in the electrical field.
10 Months
The Health Care Aide program is a six-month certificate program that prepares students to function as a health care team member in institutional and community settings. The program is available in a number of locations.
6 months
Start your career in one of Canada’s most in-demand trades with our 10-month Heavy-Duty Mechanic Pre-Employment Program. Designed for hands-on learners, this program provides the foundational skills, knowledge, and real-world experience needed to begin an apprenticeship and enter the workforce with confidence.
10 months
The Indigenous and Northern Counselling Skills Program provides the knowledge and skills required to provide guidance and support in a culturally proficient and professional way for Indigenous and northern peoples. All courses reflect Indigenous worldviews, ways of knowing, and culture. Theories of healing and health also include Cognitive Behavioural, Strengths Based, and Solution Focused Counselling.
2 Years
The Industrial Welding program provides students with the practical skills and technical knowledge required for entry-level employment in the welding trade. The program emphasizes hands-on training combined with essential theory, preparing graduates for work as welding operators, welder’s helpers, or apprentices. Students gain experience in a range of welding processes, including arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding, brazing, GMAW, GTAW, and arc-air cutting. Strong emphasis is placed on occupational safety, proper tool use, and safe workplace practices. Graduates receive a certificate and may pursue apprenticeship training toward journeyperson certification.
10 Months
Join us for a globally recognized IT experience. The InTeRN program prioritizes hands-on experience to give you an excellent foundation for a career in IT. The program is tailored to and accepts applications from Indigenous women. The Intro to Construction Trades Program provides learners with the entry level knowledge needed to gain employment and be effective as new hire in the construction industry.
10 Months
The ITST program provides hands-on training in computer hardware, software, networking, and technical support while preparing students for the CompTIA A+ certification.
5 months
The Kenanow Bachelor of Education is a northern-based and Indigenous focused teacher education program.
2 years post Bachelor’s Degree, or 5 years Integrated Studies
This is a 10-month preparatory program for adults who are looking at a career in law enforcement. The main focus is on preparing students to gain employment for policing and corrections. The Faculty offers a minor in Science. The study of Science is the study of the physical environment around us. Science analyzes and explains the organization and structure of matter and of life, and harnesses and applies that understanding for the betterment of humanity. Graduates with a science background are able to go on to further studies and careers in a variety of engineering, technology and health-related fields.
This two-year diploma program emphasizes interrelationships among natural resources including forests, water, fish, and wildlife.
2 Years
The Office Assistant One-Year Certificate Program prepares students for success in entry-level administrative roles by building strong foundational business and professional skills.
1 Year
The Primary Care Paramedic program is uniquely structured to help students succeed. By the end of the two-year diploma, students will have fulfilled all prerequisites to be eligible for the PCP COPR exam. Successful completion of this exam grants licensure from the College of Paramedics of Manitoba to practice as a Primary Care Paramedic.
2 Years
The Social Sciences program at University College of the North offers students a broad and engaging exploration of human societies, social relations, and the forces that shape social life. It draws on disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, and geography, as well as interdisciplinary fields like global studies and post-colonial thought. Students develop critical thinking and research skills while examining social phenomena from multiple perspectives, including Indigenous ways of knowing. The program encourages understanding of social issues locally in northern Manitoba, across Canada, and globally. Graduates are well-prepared for careers or further education that require insight into social structures and human behaviour.
3 – 4 Years
Nursing is one of the most vital and in-demand professions in health care. This four-year program, offered in partnership with the University of Manitoba, allows students to complete their entire degree at University College of the North (UCN) in The Pas or Thompson.
