Astrid’s journey with the University College of the North may not be traditional but it has taken her exactly where she is meant to be!
Originally from Panama, Astrid came to Manitoba to pursue her studies. She eventually found her way to UCN through recommendations and friendships. After completing the Office Assistant program as a UCN student and now alumna, she began her career here as an intern, taking her first professional steps in a place that she says already felt like home. Today, Astrid serves as the Executive Assistant to the Vice-President of Finance, a role she has grown into over the past two years with dedication and pride.
“UCN is special for me because I studied here, then I graduated, started as an intern and then I slowly started growing professionally here. Starting in the Faculty of Arts Business and Science and now the VP of Finance, all with the same supervisor!”
Astrid says she enjoys learning something new every day and being part of a supportive, encouraging team. Her role has helped her strengthen her professional communication skills and build confidence, especially when working with external partners and third-party organizations. These are experiences that she says pushed her beyond her comfort zone.
Known for her willingness to help, Astrid makes time for others and takes genuine satisfaction in ensuring things run smoothly, whether that’s coordinating travel arrangements or supporting her colleagues behind the scenes.
“I’m always able to help. Like if someone needs help, I’m always there. I always make time for people. And I don’t know, I think that’s pretty much me. I love helping, and I know I am in the right position at the right place to do that.”
Having worked in banking and real estate before joining UCN, Astrid says this is the best place she has worked. From student to intern to valued team member, her story reflects what makes UCN special to so many: a community that supports growth, values people, and helps them shine.
