Why did you choose UCN?
I chose UCN because it was one of the closest to my hometown. Starting my first year of bachelor’s degree during COVID made it easier to stay close to family and friends.
Did you know what you wanted to take at UCN?
At first, no. During my first few years of studying Bachelor of Arts, I continued working with children and youth across Manitoba. That’s when I decided to pursue it professionally. The opportunity to make a small difference motivated me to pursue a career in education.
How have your professors and instructors impacted your time at UCN?
Many of my instructors and professors have had a positive impact on my education. During my first year, one instructor helped me through my first term by sitting with me and ensuring I understood assignments and submitted them on time. As the years went on, I met more instructors and built strong connections, making communication easier.
What was your most memorable experience during your time at UCN?
My most memorable experiences at UCN were probably my two-year education program. During those two years, I formed lasting friendships with my peers and learned from many professionals. Another highlight was taking a land-based course during my bachelor’s degree. It reminded me of home and allowed me to learn directly from the land.
What is the most important lesson you have learned during your time at UCN? I think the most important lesson I’ve learned at UCN is patience and the ability to learn from one another. It didn’t matter your age or background; everyone had a story to share, and we enjoyed each other’s company.
What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time at UCN?
My greatest achievement is earning my first degree. It was my goal to finish what I started, and I’m so glad I did. I met some incredible people who helped me grow as a person. It’s a huge accomplishment for me.
How does it feel to be graduating?
It feels unreal, and I’m thrilled to not stress about anything academic for a few years. I owe my continued progress to my family and friends who encouraged me, even when I doubted myself. They saw something I couldn’t, and I’m grateful for that.
What’s next for you? Tell us your hopes and plans!
I’ve been offered a teaching position at the local school district, a position that I’ve wanted! I’m excited about this new journey and to see where it leads. Eventually, I hope to give back to my community, having gained more experience during my initial years of teaching in Thompson.
What advice would you give somebody who’s just starting out at UCN?
Don’t be afraid to start something new for yourself, even if it’s outside of your comfort zone. It can be overwhelming starting something new, but there are plenty of students who feel exactly the same way as you! We are all aiming to create new opportunities and to create everlasting memories. Do something that inspires you to become the best of yourself; don’t let anyone change that.

Family and Friends: Masi Chok for being so patient with me and offering advice when I needed it. Your support has been a huge help in getting me this far. Instructors: Thank you for all your hard work in helping me reach where I am today. I’m incredibly grateful to have learned from some of the best instructors at the Thompson campus. I want to express a big thank you to the Kenanow Instructor, Amanda. The program wouldn’t be the same without her. I also wanted to give a big thank you to Dr. Asfia Kamal, who had a big impact on my education due to her constant support. Even after I completed the bachelor’s program, she always offered new opportunities.
