Instruction & Research

I strongly believe that helping future teachers, nurses and other developing professionals learn how to think critically about our society, our government, and our economic systems, is a crucial part of educating citizens who will care about justice and fairness in our society, and professionals who can make achieving it a part of their vocation. In my classes I want students to learn to critically evaluate claims and ideas, and put these skills to use in analyzing relevant and current concerns for our society. I think this has to be a part of the process of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and that it is every bit as vital for society as basic skills for employment.

My interests include economics and environmental issues at local and global levels, critical approaches to economics, and liberal democracy and the emergence of extreme political views including the ideas and philosophies supporting them. I have also become very interested in the relationship between institutions in society, mental health and illness and social and economic inequality.
