(Flin Flon, MB) – University College of the North (UCN) is excited to announce applications for the second intake of students to the Mining Readiness Training Program. The students from the first intake started training this week in Sagkeeng First Nation. The second intake will be held in part at the Foran McIlvenna Bay Project site near Flin Flon, MB. Offered in partnership with NORCAT and PrairiesCan, the program aims to prepare participants for careers in the mining industry.

Jamie Grant, Associate Vice-President of Community and Industry Solutions at UCN, expressed enthusiasm about the program.

“We’re excited to be part of this moment for the mining industry,” Grant said. “Mining is a dynamic, growing sector that offers endless opportunities for those willing to step in and work hard. By launching this program, we’re not just teaching skills—we’re actively helping build the future workforce for an industry vital to northern Manitoba.”

A key benefit of this program is that tuition and materials are fully covered for all accepted participants.

“We recognize that financial barriers often stand between people and the opportunities they deserve,” Grant explained. “By offering this training at no cost, we’re ensuring that more people have the chance to build a brighter future.”

Graduates of the program will earn a dual certificate from UCN and NORCAT. Designed for those seeking entry-level mining jobs, the program combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like virtual and augmented reality to build essential workforce readiness skills.
