UCN Is Accepting Applications for Paramedic Training at The Pas Campus for Fall 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 29, 2024

(The Pas, MB) –University College of the North (UCN) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Primary Care Paramedic Program at The Pas Campus for the Fall 2024 intake. This comprehensive program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to begin a career in paramedicine.

The two-year diploma program is structured to ensure student success. Graduates of the two-year program will have completed all prerequisites for the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) COPR exam to enter a career as a paramedic.

Helga Bryant, UCN Dean of Health, emphasized the need for paramedics in the north and the opportunities this program provides for future paramedics.

She said, “This program is a crucial step in addressing the shortage of paramedics in our region. By offering comprehensive training and licensure opportunities, we equip students with the skills they need to make a difference in their communities.”

An Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) exit option after the first year offers flexibility should a student encounter a life event or need additional time to complete training. A certified EMR can work for up to 4 years, at which time mandatory upgrading to PCP will be required.

“Hands-on training is a cornerstone of our approach in the Primary Care Paramedic Program,” said Chelsea Friesen, Paramedic Program Coordinator at UCN. “From day one, our students are immersed in real-world scenarios that teach them critical thinking and decision-making under pressure. This immediate application of skills prepares our graduates to transfer their learned skills directly to the workplace.”

Prospective students can apply for the Paramedic Training program at ucn.ca.

University College of the North provides learning opportunities to northern communities while respecting diverse Indigenous and northern values.
