History (BA)

The study of history is concerned with the record of past events and developments. Incorporating a variety of critical perspectives, theoretical approaches, and methodologies. History offers analysis of and commentary upon the cultural, political, intellectual, social, and economic dimensions of past human experience and endeavour.

Program Overview

Certification Options

History students will complete 30 credit hours of coursework in History for the three-year B.A. degree. Prior to declaring the major in History, students must complete HIS.1000 and HIS.1001. This requirement may be waived with permission of the Dean.

Required Courses:

  • 6.0 credit hours (1000-level History):
    HIS.1000 Canadian History: Pre-Confederation and
    HIS.1001 Canadian History: Post-Confederation

  • 3.0 credit hours:
    HIS.2105 World History and Western Civilization 1
    or
    HIS.2155 World History and Western Civilization 2

  • 3.0 credit hours:
    ANS.2200 The History of the Fur Trade and Aboriginal Societies, 1600–1870
    or
    ANS.2250 The Métis Nation

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum 12 credit hours at the 2000 level or higher

  • Minimum 12 credit hours at the 3000 level or higher

Requirements

  • Students who choose a major or minor in English must meet all general requirements for the BA degree, as well as the specific major/ minor requirements.

  • Students should meet with a faculty advisor prior to declaring a major or minor, and should always meet with academic and faculty advisors prior to registering for courses.
