Introducing: Ethel Nyabeze

Job title: Program Coordinator – UCN Class 5 Driver Training Program – Community & Industry Solutions

When UCN Program Coordinator Ethel Nyabeze first started at UCN as part-time support staff for FABS, her current role did not exist for at least another seven years. Her journey to the program coordinator position was not direct, but the experiences she gained along the way contributed to her success. While continuing her education, Ethel grew into a full-time position in assessment services, then became a quality assurance officer in academic development before finally reaching her current role.
“I am learning every time I make a move. Looking back, I think all those roles prepared me for this one. I was able to learn and understand education, adult learners, working with communities and providing quality programs. I’m very happy to be where I am because I know this has been a long time coming!”
Ethel took on the program coordinator role when UCN’s Class 5 Driver Training Program began. She says this pushed her outside her comfort zone by taking on an entirely new program, but adds the challenges were worth it. Ethel sees the program’s direct impact.
“It’s not just a license to drive a vehicle, it’s so much more than that. It’s their job, it’s making parenting easier, it’s giving them freedom. We’ve seen dancing, kneeling and praying. People are so happy to have their license!”
The program helps newcomers settle into their new country, enables individuals to secure or maintain employment, and fosters independence for young and older learners, creating opportunities for everyone involved.
Ethel says she enjoys the environment at UCN where education is not just about academics but also about the learner. UCN supports students’ personal and professional journeys. She says community is felt, and there is a real opportunity to make a difference.
“UCN is special because of its deep connection to the North and its commitment to serving our communities. We are all working on this big thing together within our areas.”
