UCN’s Northern Manitoba Mining Academy and Foran Mining
The program runs from February 10 – March 7, 2025

Training delivery and locations:
Weeks 1 and 4 are delivered at UCN's Northern Manitoba Mining Academy in Flin Flon. Classes are Monday through Friday, 7 hours a day.
Weeks 2 and 3 are spent at the Foran McIlvenna Bay project site four days a week, 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday. Students stay in the camp for three nights each week.
The Foran McIlvenna Bay Project site is an alcohol—and drug-free environment, so successful program applicants will be required to pass an alcohol and drug test as part of their condition of acceptance.

Why UCN Mining Readiness Program?
NORCAT has over 20 years of experience enhancing workplace productivity, focusing on mining and safety.
In 2023, NORCAT partnered with University College of the North (UCN) to create a sustainable mine skills training program that aimed to support learners, strengthen the local workforce, and benefit the mining industry.
The Mining Readiness Program offers hands-on learning, covering topics like the Fundamentals of Mining, Workplace Safety, and practical skills such as operating a Forklift. It also incorporates virtual reality training for rock scaling and hoisting techniques and mine site tours. This four-week program provides a comprehensive overview of a career in mining.
Program Description:
- Duration: 4 weeks
- Focus on Workforce Readiness Skills
- A mix of Classroom and Experiential Learning
- Includes the use of Hands-On, Theory, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Training
- Aimed at Developing Skilled, Safety-Focused Workers Ready for the Mining Industry
- Tuition and Materials Provided to accepted students

Outcomes:
Upon completion, participants can expect:
- Enhanced worker confidence and preparedness for mining industry roles
- Graduates of the program will be accredited with a joint UCN/NORCAT certificate, which provides credentials recognized by the mining industry. This includes WHMIS, Working at Heights, Elevated Work Platform, and Forklift operation.
