Thompson, MB – In an effort to bolster the mining industry and support the growth of northern Manitoba, the University College of the North (UCN) has announced the launch of a Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program. Scheduled to run from March 25th to May 3rd, 2024, in Thompson, Manitoba, this program addresses the increasing demand for skilled heavy equipment operators in the region.
Doug Lauvstad, President and Vice-Chancellor at UCN, emphasized the critical role that Heavy Equipment Operators play in successful mining operations. “The mining industry is expanding in northern Manitoba, and Heavy Equipment Operators are crucial to its growth,” stated Lauvstad. He further added that mining companies and other sectors such as transportation and heavy construction have been urging UCN to deliver this specialized training.
Recognizing the urgent need for trained operators in northern communities, Lauvstad highlighted the program’s wider benefits. “The north needs these skills to build our communities and grow our economy,” he explained. To ensure the program’s quality and effectiveness, UCN has partnered with the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Manitoba (OETIM), Inc. This collaboration gives students access to highly qualified instructors and training regarded as the industry’s best.
The program, scheduled for March 2024, will consist of 80 hours of Heavy Equipment Operator theory, 160 hours of practical equipment training on various pieces of machinery, as well as safety and cultural awareness training.
“The customized training allows those who live in the north to learn close to home,” said Jamie Grant, Associate Vice-President, Community & Industry Solutions at UCN. “By offering this program in Thompson, we are ensuring that students have access to high-quality training without travelling long distances.”
This marks the third time in the past 18 months that UCN has offered this program, with plans for future program offerings in the pipeline.
