Duties

Reporting to the Dean, the Heavy-Duty Mechanic Instructor delivers industry-endorsed, culturally relevant curriculum, assesses student learning, and fosters a safe, inclusive learning environment. The role includes maintaining academic and administrative records, mentoring and supporting students, maintaining shop facilities and equipment, contributing to curriculum development, and supporting work placements and industry partnerships. The incumbent will participate in program planning, reviews, recruitment, and professional development, remains current with industry and technological trends, supports Prior Learning Assessments, and ensures compliance with Workplace Safety and Health legislation and institutional policies.

Required Qualifications

• Red Seal Certification- Heavy Duty Mechanic (Heavy Equipment Off-Highway, Truck & Transport, or Agricultural Mechanic)
• Experience in diagnosis and repair of diesel engines, electrical systems, braking systems, and hydraulic systems
• Experience teaching, training, or instructing in a trades or post-secondary environment
• Working knowledge of adult education principles and a commitment to ongoing professional development
• Ability to create and maintain a positive, respectful, and culturally relevant learning environment paired with a compassionate approach to coaching and mentoring students
• Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and experience working with Indigenous Peoples and northern residents
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Technical skills in the use of current information technology
• Ability to comply with and support Workplace Safety and Health legislation and institutional policies
• Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
• Effective time management skills
• Commitment to life-long learning

Assets

• Experience with curriculum development and revision
• Experience supporting work placements and student/industry liaison
• Experience participating in program advisory committees or academic reviews

Conditions of Employment

• Candidates must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• College Instructors are required to complete the Teaching for Learning (TFL) in Applied Education program or have previously completed the Certificate in Adult Education (CAE)
